The Best Roofing Materials for San Diego's Climate

San Diego County is easy on roofs in one way and hard on them in several others. There is no freeze-thaw cycle here, which is the single most destructive force on roofs in most of the country. What replaces it is relentless UV, long dry spells broken by concentrated rain, offshore winds that pull at edges, salt air near the coast, and in much of the county, real wildfire exposure. A material that performs beautifully in Ohio can age badly here, and the reverse is also true.

What This Climate Actually Demands

UV resistance. Sun is the primary aging force on a San Diego roof. It embrittles asphalt, degrades exposed sealants, and fades and chalks finishes.

Wind uplift resistance at the edges. Santa Ana events do not usually tear a roof off. They work at perimeters and ridges, loosening fasteners and breaking sealant bonds.

Asphalt Shingle
